Imagine if you could create an imaginary friend for yourself. Not just in your head, but one so real that you could hear, see, and even touch it. That’s what some people have done with tulpas.
A tulpa is a concept in Theosophy, mysticism, and the paranormal of an object or being that is created through spiritual or mental powers. … Tulpas have thoughts, emotions, and personality separate from their host. People who have one or more tulpas are tulpamancers.
Probably originates from Tibetan monks.
Modern times – basically an imaginary friend. People who make tulpas sometimes call themselves tulpamancers.
There’s a big overlap between tulpamancers and people who are fans of My Little Pony. The first tulpas created were usually people trying to create imaginary friends of their favorite characters from My Little Pony. These people gathered on 4chan and reddit.
The longer someone spends creating a tulpa, the stronger it becomes. At first it might just be a fuzzy image in their head. Then they might start to hear the tulpa talk to them in their head, and eventually may even be able to see it in their field of vision as if it were a real physical object
The main theory how tulpas are created – it’s like breaking off a piece of your psyche. In this regard it might be seen similar to a dissociative identity disorder, or schizophrenia.
Some people who experience traumatic events may create a tulpa unconciously as a coping mechanism.
How to create a tulpa
There are many techniques, but there are a few that seem to be the most popular and effective
First you want to spend some time figuring out what you want your tulpa to look and sound like. Personally I think making it humanoid would be a bit creepy, I’d want something more innocent and less threatening like a little stuffed animal.
Realize that creating a tulpa is a commitment. The process will take months. And if you ever want to undo it, it will take a while to get rid of the tulpa too. Getting rid of a tulpa is basically starving it and allowing it to “die” (or at least cease existing)
Think of what it will look like, it’s voice, it’s personality.
Then you want to spend time each day visualizing your tulpa. I would start off with about 10 minutes a day. Close your eyes and imagine it, either in an empty space or you can create an imaginary place for it to live. Try to visualize it from all different angles.
Try to touch your tulpa – hair, skin. Your hand will go through
You can even create a scent or other details. Imagine how it moves and gestures and uses expressions.
Start talking to your tulpa – either in your mind or out loud. At first it will just seem like you’re talking to yourself, but gradually you’ll start to feel like someone else is talking. This method called parroting or puppeting might be controversial to some.
Start imagining it in real life
How to get rid of a tulpa – Just stop thinking about it. Easier said than done – “don’t think about purple elephants”. Just have to ignore it and it will gradually fade away.
Personal thoughts
I’ve never made a tulpa
