Chris Chan – The Early Years (Part 1)

Hello and welcome to Episode 13 of Secret Grasp.

Secret Grasp is a podcast all about the mysterious and difficult to explain aspects of life.

We cover topics relating to the paranormal, occult, conspiracy theories, urban legends, cryptids, UFOs, aliens, ghosts, demons, and other strange occurrences.

You can find us on all of the major podcasting apps.

It’s also worth noting that Big Tech Companies like Youtube and Spotify have been deplatforming some shows like ours for misinformation. So if you want to be sure we can stay in touch, it’s best to go to our website at secretgrasp.com and sign up for the email list. I promise I won’t spam you, and I’ll only contact you via email regarding major updates to the show.

Although in this episode we’re going to talk about a different kind of topic. We’ll be discussing the life of a single person.

People say that Chris Chan is the most documented person on the internet. But unless you’re deeply immersed in internet culture, it’s unlikely that you’ve ever heard the name before.

For an average person, the level of detail about I’m going to go into in this episode could be considered doxxing. But it’s important to note that not only is all of the information I’ll be sharing today available from multiple sources, but it has also been provided willingly by Chris Chan themselves in most cases and never retracted.

This episode is provided purely for educational and entertainment purposes only. In no way do I condone the stalking, harassment, or even contact of Chris Chan. It’s fine to research and learn about Chris Chan, but please don’t try to reach out to them directly.

Also note that while Chris Chan is now a transgender individual, I’ll be referring to him by male pronouns. I have pretty much the same rational for this as the Youtube video titled “Why I Call Chris Chan by Male Pronouns” by GiBi, and you can refer to that if you’re curious.

So without further ado, let’s discuss exactly who Chris Chan is.

Christopher Weston Chandler was born February 24th, 1982 to Robert and Barbara Chandler of Ruckersville Virginia.

His father was an Engineer who worked for General Electric, and his mother was an office worker at Virginia Power. Robert Chandler was quite accomplished in his field and had at least 7 patents registered to his name.

Chris states that his first word was “monkey” when he was about 6 weeks old, although from what modern medicine states, it’s impossible for a child to speak this early.

The truth is that Chris showed early signs of autism. Most likely this was simply genetic. Although Chris claims his autism was brought about by a traumatic event, when a babysitter locked him in a dark room alone at 18 months old. After the incident, Chris didn’t speak until he was 7 years old.

Chris attended Green County Primary School without incident until 1990, when he transferred to Nathaniel Greene Elementary School. Chris again had traumatic experiences as with his babysitter, and claimed that teachers forcefully restrained him, and that he was made to sit on the lap of the principal. These events led to legal issues that resulted in Chris being homeschooled until the 5th grade.

Around this time, Chris had a trip to the mall around Christmas that would cause his name to change forever. The mall had a show of animatronic bears that would interact with guests.

One of the bears asked Christopher his name, but misheard it and called him “Christian.”
Chris Chan took this as a sign, and went by the name Christian going forward. Oddly enough, his dad Bob has always wanted his son to be named Christian, but the parents seem to have changed their name at the last moment and named him Christopher instead.

Christian and his father relocated to Richmond Virginia so that Chris could attend Providence Middle School, as the legal issues regarding his previous school didn’t seem to be getting resolved in the courts. Chris looks back fondly at his time at this school.

In 1993, Sega held a Sonic The Hedgehog contest. Chris ended up winning the contest, and got a $1,000 shopping spree at a toy store.

After his time at Providence Middle School, Chris attended Manchester High School. Here Chris had a group of female friends that he referred to as his “gal pals.” But accounts suggest that his father actually paid these girls to keep Chris company so he’d have some friends.

It was in high school that Chris Chan created Sonichu, which is the character that he’s most well known for. Sonichu is a mix between Sonic the Hedgehog and Pikachu the Pokemon.
Chris loved Pokemon and would dress up as the Pokemon character Ash Ketchum to attend trading card tournaments at a local game store.

Attended Piedmont Virginia Community College for marketing, but his dad transferred him to a CAD degree. Lost contact with his gal pals

Launched his Sonichu website and started creating more characters.

Winter 2000 – sonichu medallion made of crayola model magic and acrylic paints

Job at Wendys but quickly fired

In English class wrote “Exclaimations you’d likely hear from a black person in church” that got him kicked out

Launched his love-quest to find a boyfriend-free girl. Finding a boyfriend-free girl is difficult because of what Chris Chan terms the infinitely-high boyfriend factor, meaning it’s hard to find a girl without a boyfriend. Chris said he isn’t fond of 99.99% of men. He also made up a condition he said he had called noviophobia, which is the fear of speaking to a girl who may already have a boyfriend.

Made an attraction sign. Like a personals ad that he would set up and sit next to in public. Basically said he was a 21 and single white male seeking a cute 18-21 single female companion. Average to slender weight. Body type: white

Bottom of the sign:

“And to all men with girlfriends, except marrieds and blacks, go jump off a cliff.) Have a nice day 🙂

Soon the sign started a conflict between Chris and Mary-Lee Walsh, the dean of student affairs at the college. She allegedly tore the sign up in front of him.

Made an album called Christian and the hedgehog boys. Most popular song is “So need a cute girl” to the theme of “I want it that way” by the backstreet boys.

Submitted a tape of his Animal Crossing video to Nintendo. Possibly the first-ever Lets Play.

My own thoughts….

I sympathize a lot with Chris Chan.

I’ve never been formally diagnosed, but I’m pretty sure that I’m somewhere on the autism spectrum.

I can see how without proper guidance from my parents, it’s possible that I could’ve gone down the same path as Chris Chan. I see a lot of myself in him.

What’s depressing is that he actually is really creative. His comics, his music, are more original art than most people will create in their lifetimes.

It also seems like there were periods in his life where he looked and acted a lot more normal.

You can really see that after his dad died, he seems to have lost a lot of guidance and structure in his life and things really went downhill.

If you want to learn more about Chris Chan, I’d highly recommend watching a series of documentaries on Youtube by GenoSamuel. I’m pretty sure it’s up to 60 parts long now, and each part is about an hour long, so there’s a lot of content there.

I’m not super interested in the middle section, which is basically just Chris getting trolled by people online over and over. I’m more interested in his early life and what made him into the person that he has became.

You can also check out Chris Chan’s own Youtube channel, Cwcvilleguardian which is an interesting look into his life through his own videos.

If you don’t know how the Chris Chan saga is playing out in the current day, I’ll leave that for you to catch up on.

I don’t know how to feel about this episode or how it’ll be received, it’ll be hit or miss. If you want me to do more episodes on specific people like serial killers, school shooters, or something else, let me know. But I don’t want it to turn into a true crime podcast, I want to focus more on the weird.

Thanks for listening
