In the last episode, I started a new series on iceberg charts. And in this episode, I’m going to start another new series.
Originally I had just intended to do one episode about the ark of the covenant. But it quickly became apparent that talking about the ark and all of its mysteries will probably take multiple episodes. Not only that, but in the process of my research I came across a number of other biblical mysteries that I think are worth taking a look at.
So expect a whole series of episodes on biblical mysteries in the future. Including topics like biblically accurate angels, books that didn’t make it into the bible, mythical creatures of the bible, the story of lucifer, and more.
But for now, let’s start with the basics regarding the ark of the covenant.
Ark of the covenant is a box said to contain the original 10 commandments written down by Moses, along with aaron’s rod and a pot of manna, which is a mysterious food the Israelites ate while in the desert. It’s believed that the ark first showed up in the bible around 1500 BC, shortly after the Israelites escaped Egypt. It’s a symbol of both judgement and mercy. One of the holiest artifacts in the world. So holy that just looking at it or touching it can be deadly.
Don’t confuse it with the other ark in the bible, which was a big boat.
The ark of the covenant is made of acacia wood and completely coated in gold. Just as an aside, the Hebrew word for acacia is “shittah” and the plural is “shittim”, in case you wanted to know. This might also be the plant that was the burning bush described in the bible. Anyway, the ark is about 4 feet long, and 2 feet wide and tall. 21⁄2 cubits in length, 11⁄2 in breadth, and 11⁄2 in height. Cubit is the length from your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. Along the top edge is a king’s crown made of solid gold. On the side are poles also covered in gold, used to transport the ark. On top are two cherubim with wings stretched out and facing each other.
The top of the ark is referred to as the mercy seat, where a priest would sprinkle blood from an animal sacrifice once a year to appease god.
Ark of the covenant is where god set up his throne upon the earth and his prescence appeared before his people. In ancient encampments of the tribes of israel, the ark was kept in the middle of the camp amongst all the people. Kept in a tabernacle, which was a temporary and portable sanctuary.
Solomon’s temple eventually became a more permanent home to the ark.
Israelites worshipped false gods that led to Jerusalem being destroyed and them being ejected from their land. The ark of the covenant was lost and never seen again.
Many theories about what happened to the ark, but they’re all speculation. It’s never been photographed or discovered.
Israelites believe it was hidden east of the river of Jordan, in a cave on mount knee-bow. And that its location won’t be revealed until God wants it to.
Could still be in hidden tunnels under Jerusalem.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church claims to possess the Ark of the Covenant in Axum. The Ark is currently kept under guard in a treasury near the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.
Edward Ullendorff, a former Professor of Ethiopian Studies at the University of London, said he “wasted a lot of time reading it.”) In a 1992 interview, Ullendorff says that he personally examined the ark held within the church in Axum in 1941 while a British Army officer. Describing the ark there, he says, “They have a wooden box, but it’s empty. Middle- to late-medieval construction, when these were fabricated ad hoc.”
Other people say the ark is in Rome, in Ireland, or even in King Tut’s tomb.
No mummies have ever been found in the great pyramid so maybe it was made to house the ark.
