Disclaimer: Basically no way for a layperson to know if they are talking to a spirit or a demon. Demons will deceive you and pretend to be a dead relative or someone else. If you’re going to try to communicate with spirits, you need to do your due diligence and understand how to protect yourself first.
Ways to communicate with spirits:
Séance – Use a medium as an intermediary. Need to find someone trustworthy
Ouija board – Strong connection to the demonic
Technological – Spirit box. Audio recording devices. Other instruments that spirits and interact with.
Dreams
Channeling and automatic writing (dangerous to let another entity take control of you if you don’t know what you’re doing)
Entering a trance state or astral projection
Mirrors, black mirrors, crystal balls (scrying)
Flames, glass of water, pendulums, basically anything
Drugs
Magical evocation and invocation (my understanding – evocation is summoning a spirit or entity to actually appear in front of you, invocation is more generally calling them to the area to listen to you.)
Ask for signs
