In this episode I’m going to talk about astral projection
An out of body experience is pretty much what it sounds like. It’s an experience where you feel like you’ve separated from your body.
The most common or obvious example of an OBE is probably a near-death experience. Lots of people report feeling like they’re floating above their bodies looking down on themselves after car accidents, near-drownings, surgeries where they flatline, and other events.
If OBEs are real, then it would seem to point to the fact that people have a soul or spirit that can operate and exist independent of their body.
An OBE can also happen from a lack of sleep, dehydration, brain injuries or other extreme medical distress. As well as drug-induced, while falling asleep normally, or even from sensory deprivation.
So how do we know if OBEs are real or if people are just dreaming? There are some accounts of people seeing things while in an out of body state that they shouldn’t be able to see. For example, you might have an out of body experience and see a piece of paper on top of a bookshelf. Despite the fact that you didn’t know it was there, you can see it and even recall what the paper says once you become concious again.
While most OBEs are spontaneous or accidental, there is a way to intentionally induce an out of body state. This is called astral projection.
Basically you can lay down and by keeping your mind alert while your body goes to sleep, you can separate from your body.
Astral projection is distinctly different from lucid dreaming. A lucid dream is when you’re dreaming, but you’re aware that you’re dreaming. This allows you to take control of the dream and basically do whatever you want.
Astral projection practictioners assert that their phenomenon is real and actually occuring in the real world, not in a dream state. Some people claim to be able to visit locations or even meet up with other people in an astral dream state.
Another aspect of astral projection is that you can go to what’s known as the astral plane. Basically an alternate dimension.
So how do you astral project if you want to try it for yourself?
There are a number of different techniques that you can find online and try, but here’s the one that I’m most familiar with using myself.
Basically I would tense and release every muscle group in my body, starting at my toes all the way up to my scalp. Take it slowly and hold each muscle group for a few seconds. Pay attention to all the tension in your shoulders and face.
Then basically you just want to lay perfectly still and try to stay awake while not really thinking of anything. I would just focus on the sensations of my body.
After a while some weird stuff starts to happen. The first thing I usually noticed was all kinds of different colors and shapes flashing on the inside of my eyelids. This can be cool to watch on its own.
If you go long enough, you might start to notice a buzzing or hissing sound.
One of the most unnerving sensations are the vibrations. Basically it’ll start to feel like your body is a bartender’s mixer and your soul or spirit is the drink inside of it, getting mixed up and down. At first it’ll probably scare you so much that it breaks your concentration and ruins all your progress. Even after dozens of astral projection attempts, it would still start to speed up my breathing or heart rate and ruin it.
Eventually you’ll get to a point where it starts to feel like you’re separating from your body. At that point you can either roll out or sit up. Hard to explain… sit up with your spirit but not over-exert and actually move your body.
I tried astral projection for several months as a teenager and admittedly I never actually made it out of body. Although I felt the vibrations pretty much every time I did it. I also had a couple weird experiences where I felt like I was in a trance-like state, or something akin to sleep paralysis.
Summary:
If you want to experience something paranormal for the first time, I think astral projection is a great place to start. It doesn’t take a lot of practice or knowledge. Basically just lay down and relax and see what happens. It might surprise you.
